Meet the authors

Karen Joy Koopman

Karen Joy Koopman is a Lecturer in Education Practice and Method of Commerce modules in the Faculty of Education in the Department of Educational Studies at the University of the Western Cape, in Cape Town, South Africa. She completed her PhD at Stellenbosch University. Her research focus has mainly been on phenomenology and its relevance to curriculum studies. Dr Koopman has published both in continental and international journals drawing on the phenomenological philosophies of Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty.

Oscar Koopman

Oscar Koopman is a Senior Lecturer in Chemistry in the Faculty of Education at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, in Cape Town, South Africa. His primary area of research focusses on phenomenology, science and curriculum issues. Dr Koopman is also the author of two monographs entitled Science Education and Curriculum in South Africa published by Palgrave MacMillan and Science Education and Pedagogy in South Africa, published by Peter Lang. Additionally, he has published articles in both continental and international journals. In 2019 he received the global scholar award to visit Brock University in Niagara, Canada where he currently serves on the advisory board of the Teaching Nelson Mandela Project which advocates for the advancement of human rights through education.
